Four Wicket for Four Runs

Early start today, and kept it fairly short and sweet I think, difficult to judge. Can anybody tell me who the mystery batsman is in the first match?

2 June 2002

We start with this game way back in 2002 which appears to have been played before Play Cricket had secured the rights to some Coal Aston players' names. Mansfield batted first and despite their captain  carrying his bat for 79*, none of the others could make double figures as they were bowled out for 111. Worth noting that Ivan Dawson shared a 70-run 4th wicket partnership with his skipper, of which Ivan contributed just 1 run.

The opening bowlers did the bulk of the damage with L.Henstalk (Lewis Hemstalk) taking 5/21, and M.Pearce (Nick Peace) taking 3/12. Unfortunately no wickets for A.Draker (Andrew Draper).

In response it is great to see Sir Gerry Bradwell at the top of the order and getting us off to a good start, and considering that Ju Bradwell is down to bat at number 10, I have no idea who J. Bradlock is but he finished 23* as CACC knocked off the runs 5 wickets down. I suspect that some of the details in this scorecard may be inaccurate.

3 June 2007

I had to include this game involving the Sunday 2nds just for the bowling figures. Killamarsh won the toss and batted first, and despite The Immortal Andy Wood keeping it tight, runs were flowing freely at the other end as they got off to a positive start. Captain Beejal made the decision to turn to spin which proved effective as Jack Jones and James Knowles both returned figures of 4/4, and Killamarsh were bowled out for 103.

Not a totally convincing looking run chase from CACC but Cookie finished on 27* to lead us home, evidently running a couple of people out along the way!

29 May 2011

I think it is safe to say that the groundsman had produced a flat track at "The Bear Pit" where the Sunday 2nds traveled to play Cuckney. A bad day to lose the toss as Cuckney batted first and amassed 325/0 from their 40 overs. Their number two playing a supporting role with 83* as their other opener finished with 223*. 7 bowlers were used to try and take a wicket, with Kevon being the only one to go for less than a run a ball.

In reply, and although not threatening Cuckney's total, CACC gave a spirited response as El carried his bat for 127*, mainly supported by Grant with 43*, unfortunately the fall of wickets is not on so I don't know what the partnership was, but CACC finished 218/2, just 2 wickets falling in the entire match. Not sure I can remember playing in any matches where only 1 out of the 4 opening batsman have been dismissed!

31 May 2015

The return of Ashover to Stonelow and wickets were falling regularly as CACC batted first. Dave got off to a quick-fire start but the score was 98/4 when he was dismissed for 74, and it was in the balance as 137/6 became 158/8. However, a late flourish from Liam saw us reach a final score of 241, Liam finishing with 107* from 80 balls, including 10 fours and 8 sixes.

We obviously didn't bowl them out as they had Sacko batting to save the points, 8 bowlers were used in total but Ashover held on for the losing draw.

29 May 2016

A quick one to end on this week and a low scorer away at "The Breach" against Eastwood. After Loz and I managed 30 each there was not much else as CACC were bowled out for just 114. This turned out to be more than enough though, as we bowled Eastwood out for 90 in reply to take the win. Jack Haslam the pick of the bowlers with those figures again, 4/4!

That'll do for this week, I am going to enjoy the sun as talk of recreational cricket being able to start again soon means that the rain can't be far away!

Run chases and chasing runs!

Another fine Saturday in what may be the best run of weather we've ever had for the start of a cricket season. Oh well, looking back........

31 May 2008

The first team traveled to Wath where captain Cookie won the toss and elected to field first. This seemed to be a good decision as we bowled them out for just 75, I managed to pick up 4/22 including possibly the worst hat-trick in the history of the game - caught behind off a half-tracker, caught at long on, and caught at cover!

CACC struggled in reply and despite 23 from Nick, wickets were tumbling. A partnership between Cookie and Jase steadied the ship and we looked on course for victory until Jason was ran out dramatically. Freddie was cleaned up at number 11 with us 2 runs short of victory and Wath came off celebrating an unlikely victory.

Even though the match had finished there was still time for one more twist, when tallying up the books, the scorers calculated that the scores were actually tied, and Wath had not won. Our scorer Shads effectively bullied their young scorer into agreeing with him, and the umpires concluded that if the scorers agreed, then the match was tied!

Meanwhile at Stonelow the 2nd team staged a great recovery to earn a win against Rockingham. Asked to bat first we collapsed to 39/5, 23 of which were scored by Brett and things were not looking promising when he was dismissed. A recovery was then launched as a young Browes put in an uncharacteristically mature innings of 34 from 104, and with good support from Shilash who finished 22*, CACC managed to reach 120 all out. I imagine skipper Kev was less than impressed with Gramps being run out in the last over the innings to give them a change of full points.

Kev need not have worried however as a great fielding and bowling performance, despite 2 overs 0/19 from Crap Jack, meant that Rockingham fell 5 runs short of victory. Gramps dismissed the top 3 which was followed by a dangerous partnership which took Rockingham to 89/3 and looking comfortable. The skipper then chipped in with a crucial run out which started a collapse and saw CACC manage to hold on for victory - an exciting day!

30 May 2009

Always nice to beat Collegiate and this was a comprehensive win for the firsts. Collegiate won the toss and stuck us in at Abbeydale and after a solid opening stand between Locky and Tez, Nick stepped up with 86* as CACC reached a strong total of 204/3. In reply Collegiate were blown away for just 72, Jimbo doing the majority of the damage with impressive figures of 8/27 from 13 overs.

https://coalaston.play-cricket.com/website/results/1122187

At the same time, the 2nds made light work of a testing run chase at Warmsworth. Electing to bat first they made 171 which could have been worse but for figures of 4/6 from 2 overs for Loz, finishing off the innings quickly. In reply Sweety fell early for a duck which I would like to highlight as he knocked me out at poker last night, but then a partnership of 129 between Milly and Brett broke the back of the run chase. Brett was unfortunately ran out for 76 but fittingly that allowed Loz to come in and finish off the job, as we knocked the runs off just 2 wickets down.

28 May 2011

Another fine run chase, this time for the firsts against Treeton. Electing to field first CACC will have been disappointed to allow Treeton to reach 174 after having them 89/6 at one stage, Liam the pick of the bowlers with 5/53. An opening partnership of 160 between Dave Furniss and Rich meant that the runs were knocked off with ease. Dave's innings of 68 included 8 fours and 3 sixes (!). Loz once again came in to steal the glory, and Rich finished on 73* as the runs were knocked off just one wicket down.

28 May 2016

A dark day for me as Wednedsday were in the playoff final meaning that I had to captain a weakened first team away at Conisbrough who showed us no mercy. Losing the toss still haunts me, and although we didn't take early wickets, we were doing a decent job of keeping a lid on the run rate until Sri Lankan Arosh Janoda came in a smashed 53 off 29 balls to kick start the innings. The relief of getting him out was short-lived as Gary Strephan went on to score 97 from 34 balls, inlcuding 4 fours and 10 sixes. As Dan would say "there are no fielders in the sky". After 50 overs Conisbrough had made 357. We didn't knock them off, and Wednesday lost.

https://coalaston.play-cricket.com/website/results/2619068

To finish on a high, a quick honorable mention to Loz from this time last year who was continuing his form from the week before, carrying his bat for 115* as the firsts knocked off 188 just 3 wickets down against Sheffield Carribean, a rich vein of form indeed!

The Art of Captaincy

Not a very pleasant morning today, first grey and rainy day we've had for a while. Also the day that Loz has decided to go for a net, good effort!

24 May 2009

I'll start briefly with this game from 11 years ago, only mentioned because we have J Browes in our lineup! The only game he has ever played for the club and he got a golden duck. That's the full story.

https://coalaston.play-cricket.com/website/results/1113357

23 May 2010

Anyway moving on, and 10 years ago the Sunday 1sts were away at Newstead Abbey. Batting first and it is a traditional Sunday mixed-up batting order. We made 263/8 in our 40 overs, Johnno falling just 1 short of his half-century, before the real Browes top-scored with 64, supported by Coops with 58.

In the second innings Si opened the bowling with himself, and a total of 7 bowlers were used including 2 overs 0/23 from Locky. Newstead were bowled out for 198 and with so many bowlers used I was wondering why I didn't get a go but apparently I kept wicket even though Liam "Cymbals" Smith was in the side. Lots of curiosity in this scorecard!

27 May 2012

It's the anniversary of a Coal Aston classic at home against Ashover. CACC batted first and Coops carried his bat for 130 as we reached a first innings total of 243/6.

Ashover never threatened to knock the runs off but their skipper "the Ashover Amla" Will "The Wall" Saxton was determined not to give us the full points. He successfully blocked and saw off all angles of attack until the 38th over when he was cleaned up by an absolute pie of a delivery from Liam. Everyone involved saw the funny side but the atmosphere quickly turned sour as Roger Bolstridge came into bat, and Dave Rodgers was brought on to bowl the final over of the match - Rodge Vs Rog.

Unfortunately, their Rog did not see the funny side and loudly stated "I'm not f***ing Sacko", signalling the end of any niceties and ensuring that the game ended in subdued awkwardness. However Sacko has remained a friend of the club and attempts to sign him have been as recent as this year. If you read this mate, hope you are keeping well!

24 May 2015

5 years ago today we welcomed Blackwell to Stonelow. Batting first we got off to a dodgy start at 21/3 before a partnership of 159 between Dan and Crabbers helped us reach a first innings score of 254. Dan carried his bat for 174 including 18 fours and 8 sixes. Spare a thought for Matt Boreman who after sat watching that partnership in his pads, came in and was ran out for a duck, the big man at the other end may not have been moving too freely by that stage.

In the second innings a total of 10 bowlers were used as we were unable to bowl Blackwell out for full points, 8th change bowler Si returning the best figures with 2/11.

And to end on this weekend, there have been some great cricket captains over the years, Steve Waugh, Kapil Dev, Clive Lloyd, and of course when thinking of English captains Mike Brearley always springs to mind. However, regarding yesterday's mystery declaration, I'm not sure any of those have ever been faced with making the following decision by Locky, who duly responded to my request for an explanation....

Don't feel like I can add to that, so see you next weekend!

Some big performances!

Okay no messing this week let's dive straight in......

26 May 2007

We start this weekend with a comprehensive victory for the 1sts at home to Rotherham Phoenix, featured mainly because I love a declaration. Winning the toss and batting first Captain Lockwood led the way with an unbeaten 137 at the top of the order. CACC reached a total of 228/2 including a partnership of 121 between Locky and Rich (51). Curiously the declaration came with just one over of the innings remaining, when you read this Lock perhaps you could text me the reason why you did it??

Anyway in reply all Phoenix needed was a flake to top off their day, as they were bowled out for 99 (contact me for bookings). The lower order destroyed by a devastating spell of 5-18 from 4.5 overs by the Chunky Lover.

24 May 2008

A year later and a similar result for the 1sts, this time away at Treeton. Batting first and struggling early on we were 43/4 before a 106-run partnership between Nick and Grant (runs equally shared there I'm sure) steadied the ship. A 103-run partnership then followed between Nick and Milly, and Nick was eventually dismissed for 123 including 17 fours and 3 sixes, as CACC reached a strong first innings score of 263.

Treeton struggled against this daunting total and Chunks was in the wickets again! After Nick and Jimbo toiled for not much reward Matty J cleaned up with figures of 6/18 from 7.2 overs. Two great performances to kick off with.

https://coalaston.play-cricket.com/website/results/1048614

22 May 2010

Another fine performance this time by the 3rds at Carr Lane against Whittington Wanderers. We batted first and a massive opening stand of 170 between Simmo (69) and Barry Eke (87) ensured that CACC were on to a big first innings total. Some late innings hitting from Shilash and Grant "1sts to 3rds in two years" Woolley took the total to 243/4.

Whittington put in a spirited effort in the run chase, but Captain Woody mixed up his bowling options to get the win. 7 bowlers were used in total including a short-lived first change spell for Finn returning figures of 0/12 from 1 over (thanks for coming mate) and 2 overs 0/17 for poor old Barry, who presumably was on oxygen at this stage. In the end though Grant blew away the lower order with figures of 5/45, including the final wicket of Will Lowe to seal the victory.

https://coalaston.play-cricket.com/website/results/1344408

21 May 2016

Rain is not always a bad thing for cricketers, as this day proved. At Stonelow the 1sts batted first and were skittled for 87 by Wath. Eliot's 38 the only score of note. Shahrukh did get a wicket with his first ball but Wath were still big favorites as the rain came down to abandon the match with the score  13/1, meaning the points were shared.

https://coalaston.play-cricket.com/website/results/2619062

Meanwhile at Treeton the 2nd team were also batting first and managed to beat the first team's score, bowled out for 88. In the second innings it was real touch and go stuff, the game could have gone either way as the rain came down, with Treeton on 50/0 and just with just 54 overs left to try and knock the runs off - we'll never know what would have happened!

23 May 2017

Just a quick mention for this Tuesday night match, second round of the T20 cup where we made the long trip to Greenmoor. The game was rearranged as we turned up on a previous night in dodgy conditions and it had to be cancelled, during which Roey offered the whole of Greenmoor out for a scrap, happy birthday Matthew.

Anyway CACC cruised through to the next round with ease, batting first we reached 121/6 off a reduced 16 overs. Skipper Dan leading the way with 37 including 5 fours and a six. Greenmoor couldn't get going in reply and wickets were shared out as they were bowled out for 76, Vanders returning 3/16 and the cup journey had begun!

25 May 2019

I had to end with this game in Graves Park for the 1sts against Norton Woodseats. CACC won the toss, batted first and amassed a huge first innings total of 327/6. Loz Browes, returning to CACC after a failed mercenary mission to Tickhill, was top of the order and on top of his game with an innings of 191 from 151 balls including 25 fours and 9 sixes. Loz batted for almost the full innings and was supported well throughout, including a century opening stand with Jack Hall.

Clearly this score was too much for Woodseats, and Gramps took 5/62 as they were dismissed for 204, not a bad score in usual circusmtances! Well batted and welcome back Loz!

Great reading for ET

Back to normal today with a look back at some past Sunday matches from recent years.

20 May 2007

We start with a look back to an early Sunday 2nd team game, masterminded by Beejal and Owen at the time, and away at Newstead Abbey. CACC fielded first and bowled Newstead out for 77 (although a separately posted result gives different scores I am going with this one as it has full stats on). Great spells for the then 15 year olds Jack with 4/25 off 7.3 overs, and Eliot with 3/8 off 5 overs.

In reply CACC made hard work of the chase, Father and son opening partnership of Eliot and Chris only made 4 between them, and wickets fell regularly. Experienced heads saw us through though, Beej top scoring with 20 and Owen finishing 10* to secure victory in this low scoring nail-biter.

https://coalaston.play-cricket.com/website/results/881913

18 May 2008

From a low-scorer to a high-scorer with the Sunday 1sts away at Ashover, always an eventful trip. Batting first Rich Mintoft led the way with 128 including 18 fours and 2 sixes as CACC reached 219, usually a very good score in Sunday cricket at the time.

Ashover slipped to 28/3 early on in their innings and then 98/5 after a slight recovery. However this was then followed by a 107-run partnership and they eventually knocked off the runs 6 down in the final over of the match. Impressive figures for Eliot again with 5/16 off just 5 overs, got to ask questions of the skipper as to why he didn't get a second spell, especially when we had Loz bowling  2 overs 0/24 and Si bowling at the death!

https://coalaston.play-cricket.com/website/results/994498

16 May 2010

10 years ago and we revisit a Saturday 1st team cup fixture at Stonelow against Treeton. Batting first Treeton made 213/5 from their 45 overs, no bowling figures of real note apart from Gramps' 0/52 from 6 overs to upset the neighbours.

A decent first innings total in usual circumstances but a brilliant unbeaten second-wicket partnership betwen Liam (100*) and Loz (96*) saw the total knocked off with ease with 4 overs to spare. Loz finishing the match with a big 6 which I happen to have a picture of where the fielder ended up fetching it from the far side of the football pitch!

https://coalaston.play-cricket.com/website/results/1324534

20 May 2012

This is actually a Saturday 2nd team league fixture that was played on a Sunday, I remember it well as it was one of only 3 games that we won in our relegation season! We were away at Collegiate and I did not realise it until today but now-CACC Jonny Walmsley was in the opposition line up!

CACC lost the toss and were asked to bat first, which seemed to be the right decision as Jonny dismissed Locky early doors and the rest fell for a total of just 111 all out. El top scoring with 31. In reply however we put in a great bowling and fielding performance, bowling Collegiate out for just 74. Eliot completed a fine all-round display with figures of 5/22, including cleaning up Jonny for just 3.

A non-cricket related story that I enjoy from this match, is that CACC folk-hero Steve Thompson decided to go and watch us bat from the rugby stand near the pitch. After a while the ladies hockey team began a full warm up on the rugby pitch in front of Steve, meaning that it looked like he was just sat there watching their warm up, possibly plotting their deaths! You had to be there really.

18 May 2014 & 17 May 2015

Back to actual Sunday league games and ending this week with two games against Frechville that they would prefer to forget.

Firstly in 2014,  batting first CACC made 275/5 with Big Dave reaching 155 including 13 fours and 8 sixes. It was miserable day for Frecheville who were then bowled out for just 31. Johnno finishing with figures of 8/6, no mercy shown!

https://coalaston.play-cricket.com/website/results/2170890

In the same fixture the following year CACC reached 237/6 batting first. 65 for Liam at number 3, and putting Dave down to number 7 only angered him, as he finished 64* at the end. Dave then went on to complete a proper all-rounder performance, bagging figures of 4-11 from just 3.3 overs, blowing Frecheville away for 74.

That'll do for this weekend I think, tune in next weekend for more memories.

Revisiting Tour

Not much in the way of noteworthy matches took place on this day throughout recent years, although the firsts did play out yet another tie with Shiregreen.

I was therefore considering skipping the blog today, but instead, with the sad news that this years tour has been cancelled, I thought it would be good to look back at an old tour report that I wrote back in 2011. I have had to censor and amend some of the less politically correct moments that were originally included.

For those not familiar with the CACC tour, the "tie" relates to the wolly of the day tie which is awarded every night by a fines committee for the most stupid act of the day. The unsightly tie then has to be worn by the wolly for the next 24 hours until it is awarded to somebody else.

Enjoy and hopefully back to revisiting some past Sunday matches tomorrow.

DAY 1 - OSWESTRY

There was an early set-back to the tour when it was discovered that Jimbo had provided a bus with a broken CD player!! Undoing all Roeys hard work in compiling the tour CD! Gramps signalled his intentions of having a good time, turning up to the meet with a large tub of Stork margarine.

The first fixture was at Oswestry who held our match as the main event during their Australia Day. This meant that the likes of Eliot and Jack applied "Aussie" temporary tattoos and spoke in bizarre accents for  2 days.

The match was one of the best of the week as we recovered from 120-7 to knock off something like 210 with an over to spare, Rich top scoring with 75. Si was on 49 before being adjudged LBW by Dan "Biffman" Hemingway, it has yet to agreed whether the right decision was made or not. Jimbo carried on as he left off on his last tour.......with no wickets.

The first night was spent in the Old Bell where Matt and Jack conducted a lengthy fines during which Kev got the tie for selecting a team that included Loz as wicket-keeper, who following his performance was described by the fines committee as "the worst cricketer ever to keep wicket". Despite dropping around 54 catches Loz still claims it was a decent performance as there were no byes.

We decided to have a game of touch the cup in the pub, always leading to a good night! El gave a spirited performance throughout meaning that he had to call it a night early, he was therefore sent back to the hotel, having to be pointed in the correct direction by Chris Bradwell despite the hotel being clearly visible from the pub, but he eventually found his way safely to his room...........to be continued!

DAY 2 - SHIFNAL

Whilst waiting for people to gather in the lobby to depart, Dan came in and announced "No i'm not ok, El has pissed all over my clothes" It turned out that following El's touch the cup performance he unfortunately mistook the wardrobe to be their toilet and pissed in it, managing to avoid his side of it completely and instead soaking some of Dan's stuff. Luckily Kev was aware that the hotel provided a laundry service, unluckily, the form for requesting this service is located at the bottom of the wardrobe, and was therefore drenched in piss. Dan quite rightly stated that he could not hand that in at reception!

The match at Shifnall was a 12oclock start so I dont think we did anything in the morning, just went straight to the game which was being played at their third team pitch, scene of Rexy's famous puddle slide.

I cant remember much about the match except that we won chasing something in the region of 180. Eliot was feeling the strain of his previous nights antics and fielded in a less than impressive fashion to the point where the opposition were cheering whenever he stopped one, and cheering even louder when he misjudged the spin and ran past one!

Matt's previous abuse of Loz's wicket-keeping came back to haunt him as he was selected to keep wicket and struggled, including a run out attempt where he had taken the bails off around 30 seconds before catching the ball.

The tie inevitably went to Eliot and it was agreed that someone would have had to have got themselves arrested in order to take it off him that night!

DAY 3 - MADELEY

Roey and Jimbo got up early Tuesday to try and get the bus radio fixed but informed us that the garage were unable to fix it as they would have to order a part in. I cannot give justice to the scenes of jubilation that took place on the bus when I jokingly pressed the on-button shortly followed by the message "CD Loading" The tour CD was on!

Once again the CACC touring party arrived to lower the standards of the Shropshire Golf Club for a round of pitch and putt. Highlight of the mornings golf  was Woody's hole in one which I didnt see but the celebrations of which echoed around the course, it didnt take long for the news to get to all groups!

We won the match against Madeley despite Si playing for them, taking Jimbo apart and Gramps giving Woody out without facing even though nobody appealed. Jimbo finally celebrated his first wicket on tour, although it was a stumping whilst bowling leg spin.

At fines Dan was awarded the tie for an accumulation of things throughout the day although I cant remember any of them.

DAY 4 - PERKINS

We played tennis in the morning where Dan and I beat Roey and Loz in 3 straights including a comeback from 5-0 down in the third. We all piled into Morrisons for lunch where Dan bought a full belly of pork to tide him over.

We set a target of 185 to Perkins which they knocked off fairly comfortably despite a good spell of bowling from Si in attempt to make up for being caught out first ball of the match after declaring that he always gets runs at Perkins.

Si escaped the tie which was given to Woody for constant showing off about his hole in one, and pinning fines committee member Nick on the shin during knock up.

Wednesday night is club night which is always eventful. El spent the night drinking nothing but Jagerbombs buying two at a time, downing one, holding the other one for ten minutes, downing that, and then getting two more! Amazingly he wasnt sick!

Buzzer also enoyed a few jagers but Woody chose not to as he "does them all the time with work!"
With his confidence high Buzzer was chatting up a girl by telling her that he was training for the Olympics in his role as an Archer.

DAY 5 - WELLINGTON

It wasn't the usual hammering at Wellington but we did lose in the last over as Captain Matt miscalculated his bowling overs and left me with a one over final spell for them to knock the winning runs off. The fielding performance was a tired one with Loz eventually being swapped out of Gully to stop him diving over everything. Si completed the Last Day of Tour performance with a misfield through his legs to allow them the winning single with a ball to spare.

Woody batted but he didnt field as he pulled a calf whilst overreacting to being hit in the thigh. Matt decided to open the bowling to ensure that their first teamer got them off to a flying start. He also incurred a fine by falling for their young scorers trap shouting him the bowlers name when Matt came onto bown despite him having "JOHNSON" on the back of his shirt.

Si was nailed on for the tie until he saved himself by doing me and Jimbo a massive favour by picking up the tie from Wellington which we had forgotten! There were a few contenders but captain shambles secured it late on by smashing a pint glass in the pub, his second breakage of the day.

For some reason we had loads of fines money that had to be spent which lead to an all-night touch the cup session, going all the way through to breakfast at 7am, the staff were very surprised to see us.

What a great week!

All 4 clubs have confirmed that we will be welcome back in 2021, when I hope we can make it a tour to remember.

Highs and low of Sundays - with links!

Si has suggested, and I really should have thought about it before now to be honest, to include links to the matches I am referring to. So here they are, please let me know what you think and if you prefer it without of without them.

11th May 2008

We kick off with a gem of a run chase for the Sunday 1sts against Hucknall. Losing the toss and having to field first, CACC struggled as Underwood reached 232/8 in their 40 overs. Gramps the pick of the bowlers with 3/45 and 2 wickets for Locky including a stumping, the batsman must have been a loooong way down to not get back in time! Usually a challenging score but knocked off just 3 wickets down with Rich Mintoft carrying his bat 156 not out, including partnerships of 56 with Si, 78 with Milly and 89 with Grant.

Meanwhile the Sunday 2nds were defending a low total having been bowled out for 103 against Sherwood, with just Steve Cross and Dan reaching double figures. No problem at all as Sherwood were skittled for just 56, Dan returning remarkable figures of 6/6 from 9 overs, a great day all round.

13th May 2012

Whist the Saturday 1st team put a side out to beat Norton Oakes in a cup match, a Sunday team had to travel to Cresswell where they fielded first and did fairly well to bowl them out for 186. Andy Tye pick of the bowlers with 3fer, the skipper Grant using a total of 7 bowlers including a 3 over stint for Harry Woodford (0/31), not sure if Grant had seen Harry bowl before?

In response the scorecard does not look good at the top, with ducks for 1, 3 and 4 ensuring that we got off to a terrible start. Hex stood strong and finished on 67 as CACC only managed 133 all out in reply. The main reason I include this game is because Creswell's opening bowler took 6 wickets, 5 bowled and 1 LBW, so as he was obviously bowling straight I CANNOT believe that he didn't get Hex out LBW as well!

10th May 2015

Two games to highlight how difficult it can be to compete in Sunday league cricket when there are cup fixtures scheduled.

Firstly, the Saturday 1st team hosted Wath in the first round of the Whitworth Cup. Batting first a fine opening partnership of 121 between Big Dave (51) and CACC's first overseas player Jonathan Bosch (80) set us on the way to a competitive total of 206. Wath didn't start well, collapsing to 37/4 meaning it was always going to be an uphill struggle, but came fairly close in the end eventually all out for 181. 3 wickets each for Reece and Boschy, and the overseas player seemingly a good idea.......

Meanwhile however, the Sunday team made the short journey to Parkhead and did not fare as well. Disaster loomed as we lost the toss and were asked to field. Despite 5 early wickets, a massive partnership then saw Parkhead reach 374/9 from their 40 overs. Some interesting bowling figures in there as you would expect, I imagine Dan will enjoy Chris Park's figures of 2 overs 0/50, who I personally hope was bowling in partnership with Dom at the other end, returning 2 overs 0/40.

In reply CACC fell just short, finishing on 166/4, and the entertainment was not just limited to the first innings, with Grant carrying his bat for 40 not out, from the 40 overs faced!

That's about all for this weekend, just to finish with an honorable mention for Brett who scored 71* on this day 11 years ago, including 13 fours and 2 sixes chasing a total of just 139 against Grassmoor, a joy to watch from the other end.

Hope these are remaining enjoyable, if so, you can read more next weekend.

Some thrillers!

Happy Saturday everyone. Another glorious lockdown day which would have seen the 1sts travel to Worsbrough under normal circumstances, which I'm sure would have involved a couple of stories, but for now, here's some past memories.

8th May 2004

The earliest game of note from this weekend is a low scorer for the 2nds away at Tickhill. Batting first Tickhill were restricted to 97/9 from their 46 overs. I'm guessing it was a wet one with the 1sts called off at Stonelow on the same day. Some tight bowling figures all round but the stand out is 3 for 33 from Michael Watson who a few people may remember, think he had a couple of seasons with us.

In reply CACC predictably struggled as 41-1 quickly became 58-6, but a last wicket partnership from Roey and "The Undead" Tony Cookson saw us to victory, both scoring 21 not out.

6th May 2006

Two very enjoyable looking matches starting with the 1sts away at Bradfield, where batting first they looked to be plodding on to a lowish total at 133/5, but "Calypso" Pete Millington provided some late hitting with 23 off 14 balls, including  2 fours and 2 sixes, followed by what must be a record partnership between Si and Coley, see below if I have worked out how to insert pictures! In response to CACC's 1672/9, Bradfield were bowled out for 110, with Coley picking up 4/35.

Meanwhile at Stonelow, the 2nds were playing Dearne and going along nicely with Captain Kev Smith on 68, and Kev Hooper on 62. However, on getting out the skipper decides he doesn't want to watch anyone else bat and declares, with a score of 180/3. The decision turned out to be a good one, with Dearne bowled out for 112, three wickets for Barry Eke.

7th May 2011
A thriller for the 1sts at Shiregreen and it was all looking easy, fielding first and bowling Shiregreen out for 103. Impressive figures of 6-25 for Nick Horsfield. Not so smooth in the run chase though as 69/3 became 82/9 and victory seemed out of reach. A strong last wicket-partnership between Nick and Gramps saw us home however, with Nick completing a fine all-round performance, top scoring with 29 not out.

12th May 2018

Yet another thriller involving Shiregreen, this time at Stonelow and CACC batting first. We reached 193/6 in 50 overs with Reece panning 52* from 44 balls at the end, including 5 fours and 3 sixes. Shiregreen got off to a strong start but collapsed from 152/3 to 157/8, and when it became 168/9 CACC looked set for victory. Ben Vandrill doing the bulk of the damage with figures of 5/47. Another twist was still to come though, and a last wicket partnership of 25 saw Shiregreen manage to salvage a tie!

Phew that was a nervy one! Not a particularly funny week but some good games in there to look back on. Honorable mention to Jack Hall who scored 106 on this day 3 years ago away at Silkstone.

Tune in tomorrow for Sunday's edition.

A change-up delivery....

A good mixture of Sunday games to look back on in today's edition.

4th May 1999

I always like to look at the oldest scorecard I can find, and according to Play Cricket the 3rds played a friendly against Grindleford on Tuesday 4th May 1999. I assume that the date is wrong but I think the rest of the scorecard is correct, and there is a return fixture later in the year so I'm guessing that Grindleford were the only club using Play Cricket in the 90s!

Anyway, 21 years ago the third team batted first and were bowled out for 116 in 45 overs. Phil Mintoft top scoring with 30. They were lower scoring days back then as this proved too much for Grindleford, who were bowled out for 73 in reply. The good thing about the 3rds batting first in the days before bowling restrictions is that the juniors didn't have to watch John Hadfield bowl all 23 overs from one end, he did however take 5-18 in this match.

1st May 2005

Not a particularly eventful game away at Kirkby Portland although the Sunday team did manage to successfully defend 135. Milly top scored for CACC with 27, Johnno and Barry Eke taking 3 wickets each to restrict Kirkby to 128.

The reason I include this match is because it featured the delivery that is now referred to as "The Stroke Ball", where short-term CACC Sunday team member James Grant decided to mix it up a bit by bowling a ball whilst keeping his front arm down by his side throughout the delivery. I think Flintoff may have done this in a match before but a quick YouTube search has not confirmed this. Despite being a novel idea, in practice it came out as a very slow beamer which caused the batsman to stand back and shout "BLEEDING 'ELL" before the ball plonked into his belly. Funnily enough the stroke ball was not attempted again.

3rd May 2009

An entertaining scorecard which shows the Sunday team away at Clowne under the captaincy of A Cookwood. An amalgamation of two great CACC captains Cookson and Lockwood meant we were in safe hands here!

Batting first there were two big contributions from Brett, firstly in scoring 90 but more importantly running Grant out for 0 to ensure that CACC reached a decent total of 183. Unfortunately this was well shy of a competitive score as it turned out, with Clowne knocking the runs off just two wickets down despite a testing opening spell from P Wallis, who I guess is Freddie! The Cookwood captaincy had one last throw of the dice bringing Brett on to bowl at the end, but despite looking threatening in the warm up, he could only return figures of 0-4 from his 0.1 overs.

5 May 2013

A special mention for Hex who was dismissed for a golden duck opening the batting at Stonelow against Spital. Making the long walk back I'm sure he had thoughts of being hard done by, getting a good ball, and that it appeared to be a tricky wicket which anyone will struggle to ever get in on. His opening partner Rodge finished on 138 and Loz made 181 batting at 3 as CACC reached 385/4 from their 40 overs. Unlucky Hex.

That's all for this weekend, thank you for reading, I hope you have enjoyed!

It's just not cricket!

Afternoon all, not loads to go on this week so I found this one quite tricky to write, hopefully still some entertainment to be had!

3rd May 2003

The earliest fixture I can find from this weekend and unfortunately it's an old fashioned losing draw for the 2nd team away at Warmsworth. Bowling first CACC did okay to restrict Warmsworth to 168/8 in their 46 overs. The accomplished archer Dave "Buzzer" Ramsden was on target with 4/59.

In reply CACC never really got going and it took 45* from "Racist" Lew Ryan to make it a respectable 128/8. No runs from either of the Mintoff brothers, who made a rare appearance for the club, what ever happened to them?

29th April 2006

The first team win the toss and with Locky as captain, obviously we bat first against Collegiate. The skipper led from the front, opening up and getting 52. Useful contributions from Mark Johnson (who once got Viv Richards out), Hoss and Milly took CACC up to 184/8 from their 46 overs. In reply Collegiate could only manage 152/6 in their 46 overs, but impressively 100 of these were made by opening batsman Michael Simpson who would have reached the target in no time if not dismissed by Dale, caught out by Locky who I assume was fielding somewhere near Callywhite Lane. A young Billy Root also appeared in the Collegiate line up, but was dimissed early by Mark, who had cleverly distracted Billy by showing him a video of himself getting Viv Richards out.

30th April 2011

5 years later and another visit from Collegiate to play the first team. This time bowling first and early wickets mean that things were looking positive for CACC. In strides that same Michael Simpson at number 6. 8 fours and 14(!) sixes later and Collegiate reach 271 all out with Mike finishing 165 not out. Gramp's figures of 2-48 from 5 overs suggest that it was dangerous day for local residents.

In reply CACC made a respectable 224/7 from their 50 overs, with 73* for Hoss, and fifties for Rich Mintoft and Loz.

Despite numerous approaches to Collegiate, they have been unwilling to agree to a swap deal involving their Michael Simpson and ours.

4th May 2013

The second team were off on their travels to Mexborough. Batting first Mexborough reached 193 all out to set us a tricky chase. Veteran seamer Matty Roe the pick of the bowlers taking 4-42 from 13 overs.

In a very unCACC-like performance we made light work of the chase, knocking the runs off just 2 wickets down in 39 overs. Unfortunately the game ended in some controversy as Mexborough's captain ordered his bowler to bowl 2 wides in order to leave me stranded on 99 not out! Fairly unsporting of him I'm sure you'll agree. You will be pleased to know that I have since seen the bowler again when he picked me up recently in his taxi. I'm glad to report that he was still able to laugh about it and we agreed that it was probably a bit harsh. I feel that I have had the last laugh though, with a one star Uber rating!

I am not looking ahead to Play Cricket scorecards to come but I am assured that tomorrow involves a classic match, we will wait and see!

Have a good weekend everyone.
