You might have had to be there.....

Three games to look back on this Sunday and some good memories for long-term CACC members, apologies if some of the anecdotes here and in the future mean nothing to you,I guess it's a test of my story-telling ability, and it that turns out to be poor, you'll just have to believe me that they were funny!

29 April 2007

A real classic-era Sunday league game here at home to Sheffield Works Department (SWD). Sunday rules applied so SWD won the toss and batted first, Johnno's 5-19 did the bulk of the damage as they were quickly bowled out for 90. CACC were struggling in reply but as was our way, both Mintofts and Locky made up batsman numbers 8, 9 and 10 therefore the runs were eventually knocked off 7 down.

The main reason this game is featured is because it included a man of Coal Aston folklore. In the pub the night before a man named Ian Dixon revealed that he was new to the area and was keen for a game of cricket. As we are always after new players we got him a game the following day. Unfortunately Ian could not remember where our ground was so decided that the best place to get directions was back at the pub. It was later revealed by the barmaid that he also took this opportunity to have 3 pints of Stella before joining us at Stonelow. Funnily enough he did not manage a meaningful contribution in the match, and did not go on to make many more appearances for the club.

27 April 2008

I can't imagine that this blog will feature too many unfinished games but the people who were at Edwinstowe 12 years ago will immediately know why this one is. Batting first CACC made a competitive 216/9 in their 40 overs, and in usual circumstances Liam's 94 would have been the highlight of the innings. However. long before the likes of Dilshan, De Villiers and Buttler were playing their fancy Twenty20 strokes, the Flan-scoop was invented. Shaping up to defend on the front foot, the ball got big on Chris Tye, but instead of any evasive action, he continued with his forward defensive in an upward motion going with the ball, planting it over the wicket-keeper's head for a nice couple of runs to elation from the batting team, and stunned amazement from the fielding team.

Perhaps appropriately, rain meant that the game was eventually abandoned (just as Edwinstowe were making light work of the chase) giving everybody present more time to think about and discuss what they had witnessed there that day.

26 April 2009

CACC traveled to Farnsfield and watched them perform a long and extensive pre-match warm up which even now is unheard of on a Sunday! This did not appear to have a positive effect for their captain who Freddie nicked off the very first ball of the match. Feeling confident, perhaps even over-confident, Freddie loudly declared that Farnsfield had all the gear, but no idea.

39.5 overs later Farnsfield finished 372-6, their number 3 went from 82 to 100 in 3 consecutive balls from Gramps before retiring, their number  4 also tonning up but not being kind enough to retire. 7 different bowlers were tried out to no avail, Si's 1 over 0-19 appears to be an attempt by the captain to go down with his ship!

CACC could only manage 137ao in reply despite a good 50 from the Ginger Warrior Jason Oxley at number 3. Fittingly, Freddie was the last man out to seal the victory for Farnsfield, and to confirm that they actually had numerous ideas.

Honorable mention to P Mawby who is named in the CACC XI.

With those 3 classic club tales I am leaving it for this weekend. Turns out it is an eventful one in the days of recent club history, but maybe you had to be there.

Until next week........

Centuries, facing future teammates and many many byes!

Unfortunately the 1st team miss out on a trip to Wickersley on this glorious Saturday afternoon, and there is definitely no cricket to be played until 1st July at least, sad news indeed. But let's look back at what happened in the second week of the season in years gone by....

24 April 2004

A tricky wicket awaited the 2nd team at Doncaster Town and after Liam and Simmo got off to a steady start, 40-1 became 44-4, 56-7, 71-9......the term Coal Aston Collapse is as much a part of cricket these days as the knock of leather on willow! A last wicket partnership between a young Si Mintoft (10) and Tom Moxon (7*) took the final score to 90 all out. The middle order collapse saw ducks for batsmen number 4,5,6 and 7 - solid.

However this turned out to be a formidable total as Donny were rolled out for just 50 in reply. Fine opening spells from Liam picking up 3-9 from 10 overs, and the veteran seamer Matty Roe taking 3-12 from 12 overs at the end securing full points for CACC on the road.

23 April 2005

A game of note for the 1st team as it features future CACC all-rounder Nick Horsfield captaining Outokumpo Stainless CC against us. The wicket must have been awful as Locky won the toss and did NOT elect to bat first, and despite a captain's knock of 53 from Nick, Outokumpo were bowled out for 127. Nick eventually fell LBW to Matt "The Chunky Lover" Johnson on his way to figures of 4-23.

The second innings brought another captain's knock with Locky scoring 67 on CACC's way to victory, 42-0 did become 66-5 at one stage though as we stumbled over the line. Nick ended wicketless and doubts crept in as to whether Outokumpo was really the club for him.......

26 April 2008

Another game involving a future CACC player as the 1sts traveled to Sheffield United. Batting first United were bowled out for 155 with soon to be CACC opening batsman Dave Rodgers dismissed cleaned bowled stumps cartwheeling all over the place by Coal Aston paceman Chris Timms, who finished with 4/29. Matt "The Buffalo" Johnson picking up the key scalp of Tom Knight for a duck. Unfortunately CACC never really got going in reply and finished 127/6 in their 47 overs, Knighty getting his revenge by taking 4-31 including Matt "The Oompa Loompa" Johnson and Dan.

As a side note, on the same day in the 2nd team, Liam "my Dad's the captain" Smith took 4-11 in a loss against Whiston.

24 April 2010

10 years ago and Brett scored a big 128 opening up against Thorpe Hesley, in an innings that included 13 fours and 3 sixes. Backed up nicely by Dan who fell just 1 run short of a half -century, with CACC ending up 241-6. A score that you would usually be confident to defend but Stonelow must have been a cracking batting track that day, as despite 4 wickets for birthday boy Eliot Tye, Thorpe Hesley knocked off the runs with 2 overs to spare.

27 April 2013

A great game for the 1sts away at local rivals Norton Oakes, and Oakes got off to a good start after winning the toss and batting first. Andy Firth scored 72 in an opening partnership with Alex Hibbert  but there were no significant contributions from Alex Hughes and the others, as Liam took 6-48 to reduce Oakes to 208.

In reply, and now batting for the right team after our initial suspicions, Dave Rodgers scored a commanding 119 in a 100 run partnership with Locky. As Locky only scored 13 I guess he stood and watched as Dave hit 16 fours and 3 sixes. CACC ended up winning with 11 overs to spare, skipper Liam finished 33* to see us home with ease.

25 April 2015

We end today's edition with a high scoring and curious game for the 3rds at Stonelow against another local opposition, Dronfield Woodhouse. Batting first DW made 249/6 with a century for Ben Lambon and 4 well-deserved wickets for Grant.

In reply CACC fell just 2 runs short on 247/8, Harry Denton top scoring with 66 batting at number 8. With the next top scorer only getting 34 (Cookie) there did not appear to be enough runs scored for the close run chase to make sense, so I scrolled down to see that DW had conceded 75 (Seventy five) extras, which I am not sure I have ever seen before! My thoughts go out to Ash Findlow on what was evidently a tough day for wicket-keepers!

Right I've just received delivery of some beer from The Beerhouse to keep me going over the weekend, hope you've enjoyed reading - Sunday's edition coming tomorrow.

The Mansfield Sunday League kicks off....

Sunday cricket is often very different to the Saturday leagues. You never know the strength of opposition until too late and in the past we have also mixed up the teams and batting orders a bit to get people well-practiced. In more recent years it has become more of a bat-first, upset the local residents-hack and slash affair, but I'm confident that there are some entertaining memories within the results pages.

23 April 2006

The first record of a Sunday game that I can find on Play Cricket does not fail to demonstrate the often random nature of these fixtures. Away at Blyth CC, CACC posted 171/9 in their 40 overs. The batting was opened by John Lawrence and Barry Eke in a world record attempt for oldest ever opening partnership (Sorry John!). Top score honours were shared by Beejal and Liam Johnson who both scored 43. The DNB down at number 11 was Locky. Worth noting that Rebecca Hetherington took 4 wickets for Blyth, all 4 already mentioned in fact, John, Barry, Liam and Beej.

In reply Blyth finished 100 for 9 off their 40 overs in typical Sunday grinding it out style. 5 wickets for Beej to complete a fine all-round performance, and an honorable mention for Joe Cooper who returned figures of 0-14 from 2 overs, one of which was a maiden!

18 April 2010

A strong looking Sunday 1st team post 223-6 batting first against Newstead Abbey. Opening up Brett got us off to a strong start, top scoring with 77. It's anyone's guess what colour his bat was 10 years ago! Loz also contributing 67 towards the end to boost the CACC total. Worth noting that Rachel Scholes took 3 wickets for Newstead, namely Liam Johnson (!), Loz and me.

The total was too much for Newstead and on this occasion they were bowled out in 38 overs, Gramps managing to steal 4 wickets.

On the same day the Sunday 2nd team played out a low scoring defeat against South Wingfield which was not a particularly notable game, but the scorecard is so all over the place it is worth a mention for entertainment value.

Despite taking 4 wickets for the firsts, Gramps apparently also opened the batting for the seconds, a proper all-rounder! All 4 Tyes appeared in this game which seems to have caused the scorers all kinds of difficulty as Andy kept wicket and bowled 2 overs, all this after big Chris steamed in bowling 6 overs opening the bowling. Questions have to be asked of the captain, who is down as Simmo but who knows if this is true!

17 April 2011

A peculiar looking game played out between the 2nds and Pheasant Hill CC, who I have never heard of before this morning, and which I would like to hear the story of from someone who was there. Things all looking good at tea with Pheasant Hill shot out for 127, 2 wickets each shared out by all 5 bowlers, good first half. In reply however, CACC batted out their 42 overs finishing 125-7, just 3 runs short of a victory. A hard earned draw I'm sure???

19 April 2015

Not much to report from the first team game except that Liam was dismissed by Rebecca King of Kirkby Portland.

I've mainly included this date to highlight the importance of winning the toss on a Sunday, as demonstrated by the 2nds. Having elected to bat, South Wingfield post a competitive 343-4 in their 40 overs. Congratulations to Freddie who brought up 100 runs conceded in his 10 over spell, according to Play Cricket he was captain which is the only explanation as to why he managed his full 10 overs. We made 188/6 in reply which would be respectable in usual circumstances, but not here. David Crabtree making 104 not out to save our complete embarrassment as not many were scored between the other 10.

That is all for this weekend, quite a lot of cancellations around this time. I hope you have enjoyed the two posts so far, think I will be continuing regardless of readers!

The First Saturday of the Season

As the weather has declined for the first time in weeks, it can only mean that this should have been the Saturday that would usually have seen in the start of the cricket season. In these strange times the first half of our season has been cancelled, so I thought I would look back on previous years opening encounters, to kill some time for me and hopefully find some entertaining memories for you too. I won’t share every game but instead pick my favorite highlights.

21 April 2007

The first full scorecard from opening weekend on PlayCricket sees the first team at home to Mexborough in Div 2. Batting first it also sees our first century of the blog already, opening up Si Mintoft carried his bat for 108 to help take the total to 201. Simmo in at the end scoring 19 off 26 balls, which must be a strike rate record for him!

In reply Mexborough fell short despite an innings of of 73 from Scott Hibbett who we would face on many more occasions in the future (he was the first person to call me Harry Potter despite me not actually wearing glasses at that point, so  I have no idea what he was referring to). Anyway he was eventually expelliarmussed as he found himself run out by Beejal in an unprecedented piece of bad luck. Nick Horsfield starred with the ball taking 4–27. The last 3 wickets of the match were all LBW in a classic “umpire getting a bit cold” conclusion.

A fine start to the 2007 season for CACC.

19 April 2008

2008 saw a more familiar start to a season with the firsts at home to Rotherham Town. In typical captain Lockwood fashion in what I assume were bowler friendly conditions, CACC won the toss, batted and were duly rolled out for 63. Milly’s 26 comfortably the top score, and obviously we lost so I will move on swiftly.

18 April 2009

First game of the season centuries not all that uncommon it turns out as Lockwood hits an unbeaten 115 to successfully chase down Warmsworth’s 210 which I reckon they would have been feeling pretty happy with at tea. The game also had 4 wickets for Mark Pearson on debut for CACC (possibly).

2009 also sees the first opening game scorecard on PlayCricket for the 2nds, and it was a double win weekend as we successfully defended 174. Paul Sweet square cut 56 in a good opening stand with Phil “The Bastard” Cookson, before 30s from Bob Buckle and Kev Hooper down the order finished the job. The innings also includes Grant being ran out, which I can only assume was hilarious.

18 April 2015

The years following 2009 don’t make great reading for opening day CACC results, but 2015 sees the first 3rd team entry and a win in typically difficult fashion against Youlgrave Lodge. Set with a target of 117 following 3 wickets each for Grant and A Wood (chair), CACC made it home 7 wickets down in 40 overs, Grant steering the ship with 43. The game sees an early indication of things to come with the Hall family, with Scott and Jack both ran out!

22 April 2017

2017 saw a romping start to the 2nds season, posting 234 away at Norton Oakes. After an experienced opening partnership from Dave “Old Man” Furniss and Hex, Rich Timms led the way with an innings of 80 including 9 boundaries and 3 maximums. A valiant effort of 179/9 in reply by Oakes but to no avail with Gramps stealing 3 wickets, and even a wicket for Locky , who was captain by the way, just in case anyone was wondering how he got a bowl.

20 April 2019

Not all that long ago of course but worth including I thought, and so nearly another opening day hundred to report as Dan finishes 97no in a total of 219 against Thorpe Hesley. Eliot took full advantage of taking over the captaincy by opening the batting with himself and getting a well-earned 58 to silence the doubters. TH were bowled out for 156 with Gramps stealing 4 more wickets.

Quite the opposite took place in the second team as Roey took advantage of taking over the captaincy by batting himself at number 11 against Maltby. Having collapsed to 51–9 the skipper’s 49* took CACC to a more respectable 121–9. The last wicket stand took place with Kevon at the other end, facing 96 balls for his 16*. I say respectable but we were chasing 169 so in the end it was all in vain.

Well if you have made it this far then thanks for reading. It quickly became clear that it was more fun writing about games that we have won, so if people liked it and want me to carry on, then that’s what I’ll be doing. Please feel free to chip in with any memories you may have from these games or other opening weekend matches!
